Who We Are The Recycling Council of Ontario is a not-for-profit organization committed to minimizing society's impact on the environment by eliminating waste. RCO's mission is to inform and educate all members of society about the generation of waste, the avoidance of waste, the more efficient use of resources and the benefits and/or consequences of these activities. Since its inception in 1978, RCO has actively assisted municipalities, corporations, other organizations and individuals in reducing their waste. Waste Awards Sets New Record
There was a palpable sense of anticipation in the air on Oct 18th as the finalists for the Ontario Waste Minimization Awards gathered at the Old Mill for the annual gala dinner. This year set a new record for participation and gala attendance with a packed house of 200 people gathering for an early reception before the awards were presented. The new Arts category drew much attention with the finalists exhibiting samples of their work in the reception salon. The artists who turned out gave the audience a new appreciation for the creative forces that transform spent materials into objects of beauty and originality, while communicating the 3R’s message in a very visual way.
Ontario Responds to Waste Reduction Week in Canada RCO is celebrating a new high in WRW activity this year. The number of registered participants grew by 85% in 2007 and the momentum is expected to extend into 2008. More than 370 schools, municipalities, businesses, organizations and individuals all over Ontario took action on reducing the waste they produce. Among the many activities supported by the RCO were an electronic waste recycling kick off event, hosted by the CBC Broadcast Centre, in the building’s stunning atrium. On hand to provide the proper recycling collection was GEEP (Global Electric Electronic Processing). Employees who brought in their electronic waste took away energy efficient light bulbs donated by Sylvania.
Other events included a ‘lobby launch’ at the Ministry of the Environment where the MOE unveiled its waste reduction plan for its provincial offices. Among the numerous organized activities could be found: Litter-less lunches The RCO congratulates all those who cranked up their activity for Waste Reduction Week and urges all Ontarians to keep the bar high as we move into 2008. RCO At Work The RCO was pleased to participate in ‘Doors Open Toronto’ (May 26th and 27th) at the invitation of Evergreen At the Brick Works. The
long-range plan for The Brick Works, a Toronto Heritage Site, is to
convert it into an innovative urban green space – the greenest in North
America. To understand more about the scope of this ambitious

The RCO looks forward to working with Evergreen as they roll out their
plans with an eye to creating an urban ‘zero waste’ space.
