In my opinion, the wind is the environmentally purest form
of propulsion that has
been harnessed for the survival of man for over 5000 years.
This sculpture, "The Start" is, on the surface (pun), a memory of the
more innocent days that we used to race our sailboats and this grouping
is a strategy that requries vey fine timing. The three boats on one
side, sails tight to the wind, jockeying conventionaly to be
first
past the start-bouy, are attempting to take the wind out of the sails
of the other boats which, in this case, the leading boat has been left
with his sails flapping. Can the third boat do the same to the second?
Maybe, maybe not it is too close. But each of these boats must tack
around the bouy to get on the course and will lose speed. This is
normal. Exciting but normal. As they are paying attention to each other
they do not see the fourth boat behind them who is un-conventionaly
riding completely with the wind fully in his sails, "wing-on-wing" and
planing, virtually surfing, on a line that if his timing is exact, will
slip inside the other boats and round the bouy without tacking giving
it the greatest advantage on the first leg of the race.
