copper flashing, basalt tile.
There were two thaws in Toronto in
2003 (global freezing?), a break between the two extended and
stationary Siberian/Arctic cold fronts. For a couple of warm days I
kept
walking past this shred of rubber and steel mesh in the gutter that was
once a tire.
I picked it up but put it back again. It kept bothering me so I looked
purposely for it the next time that I was up that way. As there was a
lot of snow that winter, the street runoff was stronger than usual and
the scrap of tire was no longer there. The emotional sense of loss was
immediately re-focussed on the trash that Spring lays out before us to
remind us (or tries) of our neglectful ways. I picked up a plastic
shopping bag and started to collect a bunch of litter to make this
sculpture. On my way back I found
the tire which I used as the base for
the sculpture.
